Mice Net : October 2008
Editor’s letter To old friends “Bradski! I’ve got a great story idea. How many words do you want and when do you want it?” Over the past eight years this was an almost weekly email or phone call I received from Miles Clarke who was our most prolific freelance contributor. He was a productive writer for mice.net and many other publications, bringing to the table a high level of expertise and respect that only helped to strengthen the integrity of each title he worked on. I imagine that he made similar communications to editors of other magazines in other countries, no doubt in the same up-beat and enthusiastic manner that made it hard for any editor to resist. He added untold value to our magazine, travelling the length and breadth of the world for his craft, and he always did so with professionalism and sincerity, and very often dry wit. He was for all intents and purposes an industry icon. His funeral, attended by industry members from Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, New Zealand and even further afield, is testament to the respect he had. He was a constant in my working life for well over 10 years - Mr Reliable - and he was a good friend. In the same week of Miles’ passing, the business events industry lost another long-time member when Dawn Wells lost her battle with cancer. Dawn had been out of the industry for a few years, pursuing other goals, but she was still remembered fondly by those who knew her well. In the business events industry there is just one constant: that every day is different. It seems there are always new challenges, new initiatives, new destinations throwing down the gauntlet to more established ones, new products, new venues, new strategies, and new faces. Perhaps this is why people like Miles and Dawn and so many other professionals who have worked in or on the periphery of this business never really leave it.
