Mice Net : October 2008
young guns The days go very quickly! Every day my job is unique. Communication plays a major part of my responsibilities: client relationships, business development and team management. Being part of a working environment where there are a number of department managers leading motivated staff makes coming to work a joy. Without doubt running my own business taught me much about the challenges of management. What I really appreciate about my current challenge is the amount of training/coaching I receive in management within a larger team. Financial management, business development, meeting the needs of our clients, business plans - there are many skills that I need to keep progressing to achieve goals and KPIs. One of my favourite aspects of the job is developing team members’ knowledge and skills. To me our industry is a people industry – you’re only as good as your team. It takes a true team approach to put every event together – that includes our staff, the right suppliers and our clients. Successful event planners have supportive and talented teams and a knack for seeing the big picture but never forgetting that the ‘devil is in the details’. A harmonious team works well under pressure with a professional and courteous approach. In my experience passionate events people love good food, wine, music and company. I dine out, see a movie, show or some live music once a week. Not only do these activities help me relax and catch up with friends, they inspire event concepts and keep me in touch with what’s hot in popular culture. With the backing of a terrific team, a diverse range of clients, events and cities to work with, my focus is simply to excel! Our mission is to exceed expectations. Not every client has a big budget, [but] there are always opportunities to produce events that wow or entertain creatively. To the other extreme it is just as challenging to produce those large number or upmarket events that require sophistication and infinite detail which has to be communicated at every stage of planning. There is never a dull moment and I am thrilled to be back in an environment that pulsates with constant activity. SUPERVISOR’S COMMENTS: I can remember the disappointment when Paul resigned but I also remember telling him he was a talented member of our staff and whatever he planned to do, to make sure he got important training to enable him to advance his career. His return to our company delighted me especially to see how he had matured professionally in his absence. Paul definitely has a gift when it comes to people skills but he is also a humble individual who is an excellent listener. He has taken up his management role with an enthusiastic attitude and as the master of our wizardry department, the one that is often called upon to pull rabbits out of hats, he is rising to the challenge with zest. His love of the job is infectious. - Roslyn McLeod, managing director An inspired choice...
