e-awards 2007 Sporting Event of the Year Rhumbline Marketing - Skandia Geelong Week 2007 Skandia Geelong Week is widely acknowledged as Australia’s largest sailing event. First held in 1844 it is Victoria’s oldest sporting event with 448 yachts and more than 4500 competitors registering for the 2007 event. An estimated 100,000 visitors flocked to the Geelong waterfront over the 2007 Australia Day long weekend. Skandia Geelong Week 2007 incorporating the inaugural Skandia Docklands Invitational was held in three locations over nine days. Rhumbline Marketing’s mission was to stage a commercially viable, sustainable, internationally acclaimed sailing-based festival that is widely recognised as a hallmark event on the international sporting and cultural calendar. Key objectives were: • foster and promote the sport of sailing; (the global empowerment of sailing); • position the event as one of the world’s most prestigious pro-am regattas; • maximise the benefits created by the “twinning” of Skadia Cowes Week; • increase national and international participation; • raise the national and international profile; • expand the regatta to a minimum of six days; • continue to raise the standard of presentation and delivery; and • improve the experience for competitors and visitors alike. On land and sea, Skandia Geelong Week 2007 hit all the right buttons. 44 mice.net 44 mice.net General facts about the event include: • economic impact to the Geelong region $12.6 million (CoGC prepared estimate 2006) • economic impact (primary) to the State of Victoria $3.1m (Ernst & Young 2006) • live acts and roving performers on the Waterfront City, Docklands Centre Stage • three fireworks displays including the K-Rock Starshow XIV • spectacular aerobatics displays by the RAAF Roulettes and Edge Aerobatics • Geelong Art Society art exhibition featuring talented local artists with a marine theme • more than 50 live acts performing across two stages on the Geelong waterfront • superscreen TV in Fairnie Park connecting the regatta to the shore side • 41 roving and street performers adding to the carnival atmosphere on the Geelong waterfront • marine trade expo in Steampacket Quay • new-look website with “wraps of the day” video footage Skandia Geelong Week 2007 was in every way an outstanding success. The quality of competition improved significantly winner
