people JOY CARTWRIGHT MANAGER THE PLANTATION RESORT HERE I AM NOW ! JENNIFER DWYER SLEE DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING SHERATON NOOSA RESORT & SPA What did you want to be when you grew up: Every report card from primary school said I could do better if I wasn’t as talkative and paid more attention during class. After a few false starts, I eventually found a career that allows me to engage with people. Your first job: Working in my parent’s corner store during school holidays. Your first pay packet: When I was a student at the Conservatorium of Music I played the piano a few evenings a week in a very well known restaurant to top up the expenses of student life. Your first break: Around 25 I realised that I needed to settle into a long-term career path and decided that hotels were it. After being told that I was too old at many job interviews, I received my break from the then general manager of The Sydney Renaissance Hotel, Ulrich Renner, where I was employed as front office receptionist. Describe your current role: Ensuring the world knows what a fabulous place Noosa is to experience a successful meeting or to just relax and feel like you belong. The best part of your job: Connecting with our guests and creating memorable experiences for them. The worst: Watching the guests laughing around the pool from my office window. Who has inspired you: My mother inspires me with her generosity and kindness to others, and her ability to see the best in everyone. Your best quality: Taking responsibility to make it happen. Where do you want to be in 10 years’ time: Still working with an exciting group of people. 136 mice.net Joy Cartwright has been appointed manager of the boutique five-star The Plantation Resort in Rainbow Beach in Queensland (opening November 2008).
