Mice Net : December 2008
ask an expert questions & answers Q. I am thinking about a career change into event management. Do you think I should do a full time course, get some work experience, or a combination of both? A. I would highly recommend a combination of both if you are fortunate to have that opportunity. There is no better way to learn the art of event management than to personally be involved. It will definitely make it easier to learn the theory if you can draw on practical experiences. There are some great student volunteer programs available in the business events industry. Both Tourism Australia and Business Events Sydney run student volunteer programs which provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience during their final year of study. Some education institutes that provide diplomas and degrees in event management also offer student placement programs. There is also the option to study part time by correspondence which will free up more time to gain employment opportunities. I would also recommend keeping an eye on the jobs section of the Meetings & Events Australia website as there are often event management companies needing additional help over the notoriously busy period of October to December, and this is usually where they advertise. You will also be amazed at how many opportunities come about just by word of mouth so get out there and network! Finally, be prepared to do some volunteer work to get your foot in the door – even if it means working at events on weekends. You will soon find out that event management is not a Monday to Friday, nine to five job! Leanne Zeid is responsible for sales and marketing of ID Meetings & Events within Australia.
