Mice Net : February 2009
your one-stop- shop for events Q. How have Darling Harbour and The Rocks changed in the past year for hosting events? a. The recent upgrade/redesign of Palm Grove in Darling Harbour has really improved the functionality of this prime outdoor venue. Palm Grove offers sweeping views of Cockle Bay and the city skyline making it the ideal venue for small festivals, corporate marquee events and promotional activity. Both precincts host a wide range of events and activities. Although there have been no specific changes (other than the Palm Grove redevelopment) directly relating to event use we are finding that clients continue to be attracted to our outdoor venues because of the variety of benefits that come with holding their event in either Darling Harbour or The Rocks. These benefits include waterfront panoramic views of the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House in The Rocks or city skylines in Darling Harbour, ease of access and iconic identity and location, which adds to the visitor experience. There’s also close proximity to shopping, dining, attractions, history, the harbour foreshore - the list goes on. Q. What’s been one of the best events held here in recent times? a. The Rocks hosts fantastic events produced by Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority. The Aroma Festival and Markets by Moonlight events entertain tens of thousands of visitors but the 2009 Rocksong Australia Day event would have to be one of the best. Melanie Flanigan and brendan burke of Sydney harbour Foreshore authority Darling Harbour also hosts iconic events produced by the Authority. However, we would highlight a corporate event, the 2008 Mac Truck Launch as one of the most interesting events held in recent times. The launch, held in Palm Grove had all the elements of a great event and utilised the unique attributes of the venue. A large marquee was installed with the northern end open to Cockle Bay where a large stage was built and suspended from the western distributor freeway, right above the venue so it could be flown in for the exhilarating Tap Dogs performance and flown out for the Mac truck reveal. Framed by Cockle Bay and using the city skyline as the backdrop a spectacular fireworks display provided a stunning finale to an outstanding event. Q. How can Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority assist event planners? a. Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority not only manages our outdoor venues utilising the skills and experience of our team of venue and event co-ordinators but also produces a range of free public events and festivals throughout the year. The staff in both the venue hire and event department have years of experience in hosting and producing events in Darling Harbour and The Rocks and understand the best ways to maximise the venues for any type of event or activity. Providing clients with guidance on creative, operational requirements, logistics and compliance is all in a days’ work for the team at Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority. 96 mice.net
