As part of a $300 million project in Dockland’s north-east corner, a 120-apartment Quest hotel is due to start this year while at the southern end a 297-room Travelodge Hotel is due for completion next year. There is also another un-named three or four-star hotel planned for the precinct. Certain to add another major drawcard to Docklands is the $58 million National Ice Sports Centre, an elite sports centre and headquarters of the Olympic Winter Institute. It will also be a recreational hub for winter sports enthusiasts with two rinks for ice hockey, skating, curling and speed skating plus spectator seating. It is due to open in early 2010. Collins Street meanwhile has seen major refurbishments: The $63 million resurrection of Melbourne’s gothic-style Rialto heritage hotel into a five-star, 253-room InterContinental brings another international luxury hotel brand to the cosmopolitan city. Joseph Pang redesigned the hotel internally, adding a contemporary touch to public spaces and creating a new Club InterContinental overlooking leafy Collins Street. It offers seven meeting rooms with the largest suiting 300 (banquet) or 450 (cocktails) and the smallest a 10-seat boardroom. Australian cuisine will be a major focus at InterContinental with a special $50,000 herb garden being constructed on the hotel’s rooftop and executive chef, Nick Reade developing a special MICE incentive in which he’ll take groups to Queen Victoria Markets to buy fresh produce, take it back to the hotel and cook it for the delegates. At the Paris end of Collins Street, Grand Hyatt has just completed a $40 million makeover to upper and lower lobbies, both entrances, a new restaurant, bar and exclusive retail. Uniquely they have added a new events venue called the Residence offering a dedicated service and banquet team.
