regional victoria lavender farm plus winery tours to Hepburn or the Pyrenees. Then there’s always taste-testing the mineral springs. The winery at Werribee Park. Geelong stakes convention claim As it is about to host Australia’s largest multi-sport festival, the 70-event Australian Masters Games 2009 from February 20 to March 1, Victoria’s second largest city has re-stated its case for a major convention centre, hotel and cultural precinct to be built beside Corio Bay. The Geelong Otway region will host 13 major conferences this year and local tourism leaders say high-yield business events need a suitable venue. Geeelong Otway Tourism executive director, Roger Grant, has called for development of a multi-use facility on the waterfront comprising a 1200-seat auditorium, 4000 square metres of exhibition space, a 1200-seat dining area, plus a 200 room four- star hotel and associated retail, theatre and parking facilities. Offering PCOs an alternative to a major city event, Geelong believes the centre will generate revenue of $56 million a year and create up to 1300 jobs, and it is actively lobbying federal and state governments. Meanwhile, the newly branded local convention bureau, Business Events Geelong (BEG), continues to provide a range of support for organisers interested in holding an event in the region which stretches from Werribee to the Bellarine Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road. 156 mice.net
