queenstown make it QUEEnstoWn one of neW Zealand’s hottest destinations - even in the middle of winter - is most definitely south island’s Queenstown. T his resort town just keeps getting better and better, particularly for the business tourism market, with a bevy of top quality accommodation, off-site activities, and a great mountain of meetings facilities. And it appears as if things are going to continue to improve over the coming years with a raft of new facilities coming online. Stage one of the mega Kawarau Falls Station will see the opening of The Quadrant – the first hotel in the project. The Quadrant is taking bookings from January 15, 2010 when 98 one-bedroom apartments will open. The Westin, with 178 rooms including 12 suites, will be the second property to open for bookings from March 1, 2010, and the Intercontinental Queenstown will open in April 2011. This property will offer the largest technology-ready conferencing in Queenstown, able to cater for 1000 delegates. Quay West Resort will open for bookings on November 1, 2011, and offer 195 one and two bedroom apartment-style rooms. Presently the Skyline Gondola, Restaurant & Luge has just had a major transformation, with Skyline’s main private function venue, the Wakatipu Room, undergoing a major refurbishment. Renovations included new modern and contemporary décor, timber detailing, an extended bar and a new sound and lighting system. The Wakatipu Room boasts spectacular views overlooking Queenstown, providing a stunning backdrop for any occasion. It is just one of five function venues on-site, and can host up to 220 people for exclusive dining or up to 350 people for day conferencing. The room can also be divided into smaller spaces, ideal for groups of between 20 and 100 diners or 25 to 160 conference delegates. The Wakatipu Room refurbishment coincides with the scheduled gondola upgrade. The upgrade has resulted in a 700 to 1000 person increase in capacity and allows priority queuing at the gondola base to be introduced for conference and incentive groups. And in other venue news, the St Moritz Hotel Queenstown has just celebrated its 10th year, and is undergoing a soft refurbishment.
