Mice Net : June 2009
regional victoria is pushing to be Melbourne’s second international airport, a move supported by the city which currently benefits from Avalon’s one million domestic passengers a year plus its annual international air show. Airport CEO Justin Giddings said approval was currently being sought for the former defence facility from Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon after which the owners, Linfox, would spend $40 million to build a 7500 square metre international terminal. Mr Giddings said discussions had already been held with some airlines, but they would not be progressed any further “until the Commonwealth approves the terminal”. “Now is a good time to be talking to airlines because we have a much lower cost base than other international airlines and we are curfew-free, able to handle any sized aircraft and process over one million international passengers a year,” he said, adding that the separate domestic terminal was expected to handle up to two million domestic passengers a year. While some might think Avalon would compete with Tullamarine, Mr Giddings said Sydney was a bigger target and he hoped to have international airlines hub out of Avalon. Infrastructure upgrades, such as a spur line rail link to the existing Geelong to Melbourne passenger train, would also be warranted if approval was given. The bureau has launched a regional Delegates Pass 2009, for delegates attending meetings in the area. It offers specials and extra privileges at attractions, restaurants and activities across the region, and with one year’s validity it is hoped delegates will return as leisure visitors.
