Mice Net : October 2009
mice.net 87 WHAT THE TWITTER? Most people won't admit it but they are confused about 'web 2.0' and 'social technology'. That is a worry considering the enormous opportunity the tools present for every company in the country! Practicing what I preach in regard to ongoing professional education I decided to attend the MEA NSW professional development session appropriately named "What the Twitter". I did this because I myself use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends, and I now even upload photos from my Blackberry. I realise I am a pest with my status updates and weird photos, but hey what are family and friends for? I accepted a friend invitation from Linkedin once but had no idea what to do next? I had even signed up to Twitter but what next? Realising this was not assisting our association, I decided it was time to learn! Along with 50 other industry professionals I worked out very quickly that I was not alone. In fact, I may have even been slightly advanced on some. Listening to the presenters from The Productivity Project and our own MEA members David Addison from Avanti Events and Stuart Frank from APAC Events/Gartner I soon started to feel very savvy. David was speaking as a relatively new user and certainly one baby boomer intent on keeping up with technology in business, while Stuart provided his own expert insights. As a result of my morning at school, I've decided it's time! Soon our MEA members can look forward to visiting us on Facebook at least as a start, and after that we may even tweet you. Thank you tow all concerned for an education filled morning. At MEA that's what we are all about. MEA LAUNCHES NATIONAL Y-MEA WEEK IN OCTOBER Since the launch of Y MEA (Young MEA) three years ago, Y MEA events have been held by almost every branch of MEA as well as a national Y MEA event held at AIME in 2009. Y MEA Forums held at both the 2009 Adelaide and 2008 Alice Springs MEA National Conferences were very successful with case studies from industry presenters as well as a program of educational sessions to ensure participants were gaining new skills. Now, MEA is proud to launch Y MEA Week - October 19-23, 2009. During this week Y MEA Forums will be held around the country to stimulate, educate and engage young business events professionals aged 27 years and under. Nationally, a program of core elements will be included covering: a meetings and events industry update; innovation and creativity; negotiation; and sustainable events. These will be complemented by topics selected by Y MEA committees in each state. Rounding off the program participants will workshop concepts and topics to be considered for the Y MEA Forum at the 2010 MEA National Conference being held in Melbourne from April 17 to 20. Those wishing to participate or learn more about Y MEA Week should contact MEA's National Y MEA Coordinator Rebecca Harris on (02) 9929 5400. Conrad Jupiters is a proud national supporter of MEA and has many team members actively involved from the event services and sales teams. Clare Lee, event sales manager has been on the MEA QLD branch committee for a period of three years, and also heads the Y MEA (Young MEA) sub committee in QLD. Christie Manclark has been a member of the Y MEA sub committee for the past 12 months, and the following Conrad Jupiters team members have 'Associate Fellow of MEA' (AFMEA) status: Clare Lee, Janelle Willson, Cameron Cuskelly, Maria Ipson and Michelle Mann. Conrad Jupiters' success is dependant on accredited and well- trained professional team members who can consistently deliver exceptional results. This is a strong selling point that we convey to clients and this has greatly assisted us to secure many high calibre events including some of the largest groups to visit the Gold Coast in 2009, including, Taiwan Life Insurance incentive for 900 delegates and Intel Asia Pacific Summit for 600 guests.
