news minister announces new business events M embers of the Business Events Strategy Implementation Group will work on strategies to ensure the sector is sustainable and internationally competitive for the next 20 years. Minister Ferguson said the business events segment was one of Australia's three major tourist market segments (the others being leisure tourism and international education), and more effort needed to be given to it. “International conference delegates can spend more than five times as much as the leisure visitor. Australia has consistently rated among the top five destinations in the Asia-Pacific and destination studies show we are consistently seen as the number one destination to visit for business purposes, but we must not become complacent,” he said. “The industry has developed A National Business Events Strategy for Australia 2020 which it believes will deliver on the goals of sustainability and competitiveness. Representatives from Wollongong, Newcastle/Hunter, the Blue Mountains and the Central Coast will hold a showcase at the Hyatt Hotel Canberra to a market which has traditionally been a strong one for regional NSW destinations. This is the first time these four areas have come together with a showcase targeting the Canberrabased meetings sector and if successful, could be the template for future marketing activities. The event is designed to provide corporate, association, government, PCOs, and private sector meeting planners with an overview of options available in these regions. The event will have a ‘freeflow’ expo format where buyers are invited to call in between 2pm and 6pm. Prizes will be drawn every half hour, afternoon tea will be served between 2pm and 4pm, and canapés and drinks between 4pm and 6pm.
